The rise of AI-generated music has sparked a heated debate about the future of the creative industry. While some celebrate the explosion of AI-made songs, others fear the loss of artistry and the creative process. The case of Brisbane DJ Josh Fawaz's cover of Madonna's Like A Prayer has brought this issue to the forefront. The song's success and the subsequent questions about its production have ignited a discussion about the role of AI in music creation. In my opinion, this is a fascinating development that raises important questions about the nature of creativity and the future of the music industry. The use of AI in music production is not new, but the scale and accessibility of AI tools have recently exploded. Each day on the biggest platform for making AI-generated music, Suno, about seven million songs are created. To put that in perspective, in two weeks there were more songs made on just one platform than Spotify's entire back catalogue. This rapid growth has led to concerns about the impact on human creativity and the potential for AI to replace human artists. The issue is further complicated by the debate around copyright and the use of AI-generated music. While some argue that AI is simply a tool that enhances human creativity, others believe that AI is stealing the work of human artists and that the models rely on stolen works. The Australian government has faced lobbying to give AI firms immunity from copyright laws, but has so far pushed back on a proposed text and data mining exemption. In my view, the solution lies in finding a balance between embracing the potential of AI and protecting the rights of human artists. The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has proposed a global labelling system that would make it clear if and how generative AI was used to make a song. This system would use simple icons to note AI use, with "AI-Generated" songs to be classified as when primary or all creative elements of a track were made artificially. "AI-Assisted" labels would apply when a recording was largely human made, but generative AI was used for some elements. Personally, I think this is a practical and proactive step towards addressing the issue. However, the challenge remains in ensuring that AI-generated music is not used to bypass the rights of human artists. The broader implications of this issue are far-reaching. It raises questions about the nature of creativity and the role of technology in the creative process. It also highlights the need for greater protection and remuneration for artists in the digital age. As AI continues to evolve and become more accessible, it is crucial that we find a way to harness its potential while preserving the human element of creativity. In conclusion, the rise of AI-generated music is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires careful consideration and proactive measures. By embracing the potential of AI while protecting the rights of human artists, we can ensure that the creative industry continues to thrive in the digital age.
